Households participation in energy conservation

Hi guys! How’s your day? Is it going well? I do hope so. It’s already day10 of #15HariCeritaEnergi. Today I wanna discuss about the role of households in conserving energy. I think it’s an important thing to concern since household is a unit which enjoy and get the direct impact if the energy someday run out. Also, I think the energy conservation has to be done by all the parties, including the government, the scientists, the engineers, and also the household which consist of individuals. It is so unfair if all we do is only blaming the government when something bad happens, yet we don’t do anything matters to participate in making better world.

After having thought that households should take part in conserving energy, we sure have bunch of questions in our head. Why the households should participate? How can households participate? What should the households do to participate? Is the way effective and efficient enough to conserve energy? Let’s try to answer the questions one by one.

Why the households should participate? Households constitute an important target group, being major contributors to the emission of greenhouse gases and, consequently, global warming (Abrahamse, et al, 2005). The energy consumption by household sure takes part amongst total energy consumption by other users. We can simply realize it since in this era, the household use electricity for the lighting, electric stuff such as washing machine, refrigerator, TV, etc. Also, it can’t be denied that almost every household has at least a vehicle that should be turned on using various kind of fuel. What I mentioned above surely needs energy be operated. We can predict that the household mostly use the conventional energy. But, as I ever told in previous post, conventional energy is limited, and in some points it gives bad impacts to environment. So, as the energy user, the household should be considered about this issue. If household aint able to produce renewable energy yet, at least, the household can participate in conserving energy so that the next generation can enjoy the remaining energy as well.

The second question that should be answered is, can household participate? There is only an answer, yes, it can for sure. But, what should the households do to participate? There are so many ways for households to participate in conserving energy. I just wanna give super simple examples which are still applicable to do. First of all, let’s talk about the electricity of household. The household should be wise in using electricity for lighting and electric stuffs. For lighting, the household can minimise the use of lamp at noon (or when the natural light is enough), or if it’s possible, before building a house, try to design it with many windows or somewhat that allow light and air to distribute so the conserving energy can be maximum. Second, let’s talk about the electricity stuffs. The household should be wise in using it, for example, after using the charges of cellphone, laptop or something similar, don’t forget to plug out the cable. You may think it only use something Watt energy, but if you keep plugging in your cable, it’s a waste. Another example is, try to make schedule in using electric stuff so that you won’t overdo or overuse the electricity (the easiest example is watching TV that all ages must love it, just watch it as your schedule). And last but not least is, household should be wise in using their vehicles which need fuel. Try to resist using vehicles if the place you wanna reach is not far enough. Rather than using vehicles, it it’s possible,you can go on foot or by bicycle which are much healthier for the body. The other solution is, if the distance is far or can’t be catch by foot, try to use public transportation instead of the private vehicles. What I mentioned surely sounds cliche, it really does. But, though it sounds cliche and a bit out of style, the households still have to do it by all means.

The last question that has to be answered is, if the households have done all the possible way to participate in conserving energy just as I mentioned, is it effective and efficient enough? I dunno the exact answer. To say it’s effective or efficient, it needs certain measure that only can be done by the experts. The households only have to try, try to conserve the energy in all possible way. How much it helps in conserving energy, we don’t need to worry as long as the households have played their roles well. Let’s just say every good trial counts, every good trial matters. Although the impacts can be seen by our bare eyes, but we have to believe that what we do is the right thing, isn’t it?
